Our mission is to build a better world by giving compassionate people the tools they need to spread the power of peer support. We work to promote human connection. Through our training workshops and our platforms, we hope to help adults understand and support each other. Together, we believe that we can cultivate a more positive and supportive atmosphere on campuses and across organizations.

 

What We Do

Mental health challenges are ubiquitous: 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year. However, a much smaller fraction of college students actually receive support, due to both stigma and lack of services available. hEARt Listens has a two-pronged solution to the problem.

 

Engage & Empower

hEARt Listens created an engaging and dynamic Training Program to train students in evidence-based peer support skills. Through extensive research and our own personal experience, we identified best practices for building emotional connections and providing empathetic support. We reviewed it with social work and health communication experts, and incorporated their feedback. In a 10-week series of weekly workshops, participants acquire skills like active listening, crisis management, and informed resource referral. They study mental health challenges and coping mechanisms, learn to facilitate conversations, and develop the ability to respond to messages with empathy and understanding. Training facilitators lead discussions, activities, and role-plays to help participants hone their skills and build their confidence.

Connect & Communicate

Our platform, the hEARt Line, is an SMS-based, HIPAA-compliant text line that anonymously connects students who want to talk with students who want to listen. It involves a three step process: individuals text hEARt, tell us what they want to talk about, and we then connect them with a peer supporter.

We tailor the platform for organizations to ensure a smooth, easy-to-follow user experience.
